A turtle visitor at Jamaica Inn

May 27, 2013

Thursday, May 23, we had a visit from a Hawksbill sea turtle that came to lay her eggs on the beach. But before she could nest, she lost her way and ended up in the pool!
Kyle Mais got in the pool with the turtle and gently steered her toward the side of the pool where guest Gary Palko and Mary eagerly were waiting to help.
Guests and staff watched in amazement as the turtle was guided back to the sea.
We believe the turtle has since come back to lay her eggs on the beach. Last year we had 11 hatchlings on the beach. How many will we have this year?
Surprisingly, this is not the first time a turtle has taken a swim in our pool! In September 2008 we had a similar visit only that time it was during the day.
Have you witnessed a turtle nesting on the beach, or seen tiny hatchlings make their way to the sea? It is truly a sight you will never forget.
