The Enchanting Firefly

January 10, 2014

Located in St. Mary (about a twenty minute drive out of Ocho Rios heading to the Eastern side of the island towards Port Antonio), Firefly is perched up on a hillside with the most magnificent views of the coast. This must have been the motive for Noël Coward to immediately take interest in the land and build what would become an enchanting winter home to sojourn with famous friends, royalty (yes the Queen Mother once stopped by for lunch and drinks!) and to write his plays from time to time.
Noël fell in love with Jamaica and the people while visiting his good friend, Ian Fleming (writer of the James Bond novels) just nearby at Goldeneye in 1948. Over the years, the “celebrity set” visited Coward often at his Jamaica home and included Elizabeth Taylor, Sean Connery and Laurence Olivier.
Noël Coward passed away in 1973 and was buried in the garden on the property.  Today, the property is owned and managed by Chris Blackwell of Island Outpost whose mother was good friends with Coward.
Firefly is open to the public for tours where one will be able to view the picture gallery, house and garden.
Check with the Front Office during your stay and they will be happy to book this unique excursion for you.
